SUPER Gunball
SUPER Gunball is my most commercially-viable game in production right now. I am making it using the GameMaker: Studio software by YoYoGames and have posted a description of the game on their site HERE in the Work-In-Progress section of their community message boards. It can be freely downloaded and played in its current state HERE. Yes, it has issues, but the whole game can be played to completion in its current state.
Essentially, the player controls a ball with a gun attached to its side. The gun always points towards the mouse cursor. Clicking the Left Mouse Button shoots the gun. The ball is moved sideways using the A and D keys or the Left and Right arrow keys. The Spacebar or the Right Mouse Button makes the ball bounce up. Pressing the Spacebar or RMB again after landing causes a higher bounce. Pressing W or the Up Arrow while in front of an open door will use that door. There are three kinds of weapon powerups in the game: rapid fire, lasers (that cut through certain blocks and most enemies), and the cannon (large blast area and massive damage). The special weapons have limited ammo, but the pickups respawn after a short while so they can be picked up again. The basic gun has unlimited ammo. If you have problems with any particular level, the Q key will skip that level for now.
So far, there are two playable areas: Training and The Jungle. The Training levels serve to get the player used to the conventions used in Gunball. They are also the levels I play when I need to test changes made to the movement, collision, and physics of the ball. The Jungle is the "story" of the game so far. There are 10 levels to it and mark the essential game experience I hope to achieve when the game is done. Of course, I aspire to make other courses for the player to run in addition to The Jungle. Other themes such as a city, an airship, volcano, ice (always a pain!), etc... kind of in the style of early Mega-Man games.
I Googled "Gunball" to see if the name was used elsewhere and, unsurprisingly, it is. There is a Flash-based series of games with that same title. Those being free, though, I do not see an issue with my game infringing on any copyright by using the same name. The look and gameplay of my game is definitively different from the Flash games out there. Of course, being the nice guy, if anyone pitches a fit about it, I will change the name of this game to something like Ballgun! We will see.
